Met Office extends Scotland's 'danger to life' thunderstorm weather warning

Scotland's thunderstorm warning has been extended across the country in advance of a 13-hour spell of rain and lightning.

Saturday, May 11, marked the hottest day of the year so far, but the mini heatwave will be broken by stormy weather. A Met Office thunderstorm, which starts at 2pm and ends 3am Monday, has been extended further east across Scotland.

The alert concerns heavy rain that may spark sudden flooding, road closures, and delays and cancellations to public transport. The forecaster warns of a small chance that fast flowing or deep floodwater could cause danger to life.

The storms follow a spell of hot weather. Temperatures hit 25.7C in Cassley in northern Scotland, whilst the hottest temperature recorded by the Met Office yesterday was 25.9C in Herstmonceux West End in England.

Forecasters warn of heavy showers, some thundery, over parts of western Scotland during Sunday afternoon. Further spells of heavy rain with a chance of thunder in the south will follow in the evening.

The thunderstorm warning covers 24 areas across Scotland, extending from Eilean Siar to the Scottish Borders and eastward through to Fife. On Sunday morning, the Met Office shortened the warning from 4am to 3am Monday.

The Met Office alert warns of "intense downpours" amounting to 20 to 30mm in less than an hour. The rain could reach 30 to 50mm in just over two hours, leading to surface water flooding.

Stargazers hoping for another glimpse of the Northern Lights may be disappointed tonight. Clear skies are required to see the otherworldly phenomenon.
