Meteorologists have issued a lengthy weather warning for the Potteries as North Staffordshire is set for hours of heavy rain. The Met Office has put a yellow alert in place for rain for a huge chunk of the country - including the whole of Staffordshire - as the balmy conditions are set to be washed away.

The warning comes in at 12.15am tomorrow (May 22) and goes all the way to 6am on Thursday (May 23). Elsewhere and yellow alerts for thunder are in place across the south and eastern points of the country today between noon and midnight.

Forecasters say the conditions will come courtesy of an 'area of low pressure' approaching the UK from the east. That low pressure is expected to bring with it 'heavy and prolonged rainfall'.

Dan Rudman, who is deputy chief meteorologist with the Met Office, said: "Low pressure is going to influence our weather from the middle of this week, bringing some heavy rain to parts of the UK. Eastern areas are most likely to see the highest rainfall accumulations, though this will depend on the precise positioning of the low pressure. It is important to keep an eye on the forecast as the detail becomes clearer, and it is possible Severe Weather Warnings will also be issued."

The forecast will leave families across North Staffordshire dragging in the garden furniture which had been put out over the weekend - which saw some hot weather on Sunday. While temperatures on the following days have not hit that high it has been dry and warm.

However things will change tonight. The current forecast from the Met Office is predicting heavy rain will begin to fall in the Potteries from 9pm and keep going to 10am on Thursday.

Currently tomorrow's forecast shows not even any intervals of light rain - just heavy downpours. Temperatures will sit at around 14C for much of the day too.

Eventually the rain will ease up and be light by 1pm on Thursday but a cooler day with a high of only 12C. Friday will be dry all day with a high of 14C with sunshine and a high of 17C the following day.

But there's a chance of light rain on Sunday afternoon - but there'll be sunny intervals and a high of 17C. As it currently stands Bank Holiday Monday will be dry and pleasant with a high of 18C.
