The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for thunderstorms for Plymouth and the whole South West, which is set to remain in place until 8pm tonight (Thursday, May 16).

Travel disruption and potential flooding are on the cards for the region, according to the Exeter-based weather experts. There's also a chance of short-term power loss in certain areas, reports DevonLive.

The alert extends beyond Devon to include Cornwall, Somerset, Bristol, and parts of Dorset and Wiltshire. The Met Office warns: "Scattered thunderstorms are likely to develop across the area, bringing some localised disruption.

"Some heavy showers and thunderstorms are likely this afternoon, lasting into this evening. Locally, 15-20 mm of rain could fall in less than an hour, with some places potentially seeing up to 30 mm in a few hours. Lightning will be an additional hazard, with a lower chance of some hail in places.

Here's what the forecasters have predicted during the warning period across the South West:

Today

Early morning fog patches will swiftly clear, making way for a bright day with ample sunny spells. However, by afternoon, expect scattered showers, potentially heavy with hail and thunder, particularly in eastern areas.

It'll be a warm and humid day with highs of 18 C.

The evening will see showers gradually fade away. It'll be dry overnight with clear spells and light winds, leading to some fog patches.

Rural spots may feel quite chilly. Lows of 6 C are expected.

Friday

Any lingering overnight fog and low cloud will dissipate to reveal another day mixed with sunny spells and showers. Some showers could pack a punch, complete with hail and thunder.

Warm temperatures continue, peaking at 20 C.

Outlook for Saturday to Monday

Each day will start with overnight cloud clearing to sunny spells. The weather stays mostly dry, but there's a slight chance of occasional showers. The sunshine will feel warm.
