The Met Office has issued a thunderstorm warning for today - including for parts of Greater Manchester.

The yellow weather warning will come into force at 11am this morning (Saturday) as heavy downpours are set to hit much of the north of England and Scotland. In Greater Manchester, the worst of the rain is expected in Oldham, Bolton, Bury and Rochdale.

The thunderstorm warning will last until 10pm tonight. It also covers much of Lancashire, Cumbria, Yorkshire, the North East of England and Scotland.

Met Office forecasters warn that in the areas covered by the warning, 'slow moving thunderstorms and heavy showers may cause some disruption to travel and outdoor activities'. The downpours are likely to lead to difficult driving conditions, with problems on the roads and on buses likely.

Forecasters said 'some flooding of a few homes and businesses is possible' and there may also be delays to train services. In our region, the heavy rain is expected to start falling from around lunchtime.

The rain is expected to ease into the afternoon, however, with the Met Office only forecasting light showers in Manchester from 4pm until 9pm.

On the overall forecast for the North West for today, the Met Office said: "Another showery day with periods of more general heavy rain at times. The risk of heavy and thundery downpours in places too.

"Generally cool but feeling warm in any sunshine. Maximum temperature 15C."
