Met Office predicts suggen weather change after UK 'heatwave'

The Met Office has told people to expect warmer weather next week - but a big change within days. UK forecasters have predicted that parts of the country will experience heatwaves next week, offering a brief respite from a drizzly spring.

The Met Office has stated that most of the UK "will experience the finest conditions and highest temperatures so far this year", with some isolated weather stations potentially seeing temperatures reach 30C. However, the heatwave is only expected to last until Wednesday, with heavy showers, thunderstorms and persistent rain possibly returning in the west later in the week.

The warmer weather is expected to arrive early next week, with "many places" forecasted to see temperatures in the mid-20Cs. Heatwaves are predicted for central and southern regions of the country.

This comes as a welcome change after a rainy Spring, which saw England and Wales experience 32% more rainfall than average. This made it the fifth wettest for England and the eighth wettest recorded for Wales, according to the Met Office.

The return of wet weather has been driven by Atlantic systems, but a high-pressure system is expected to provide a temporary reprieve.

Operational meteorologist Honor Criswick commented: "As we're pushing into next week we're starting to see the hotter spells, but it is going to be quite brief. It will be a brief hot spell, but perhaps a beginning to summer which I'm sure many people have been waiting around for."

Despite the wet conditions, this May and spring have been the warmest ever recorded in the UK, with an average temperature of 13.1C, surpassing the previous 2008 record of 12.1C.

Ms Criswick expressed surprise at the spring statistics, stating "a lot of people couldn't believe it when the spring stats came in", but noted that higher overnight temperatures had a significant influence.

On Friday, Dan Rudman, Met Office deputy chief meteorologist, commented: "After a brief, less settled interlude today and tomorrow, fine conditions will return by Sunday and into the beginning of next week. Whether or not everyone experiences heatwave thresholds, the majority of the UK will experience the highest temperatures so far this year. Confidence in the forecast reduces markedly from Wednesday onwards, with uncertainty in both how long the heat will last and how it will break down, which we will be keeping an eye on for the coming days. However, by next weekend, cooler, changeable conditions become more likely."
