Met Office verdict on 'mega heatwave' UK weather forecast

Weather forecasts suggesting a UK 'mega heatwave' have not been echoed by the Met Office - as least not yet. There has been some reports about an 'exceptionally hot July' by Exacta Weather and before that, highs of 25C in London and Surrey by June 20, by InMeteo forecasters.

But the Met Office has been more guarded in its UK long-range forecast, suggesting everything looks to be around average, with a mix of weather types from the end of June into the start of July. It says: "Temperatures are most likely to be close to or slightly above climatological average" and you can read their full forecasts below.

Many people have been disappointed with the early summer so far, with cooler weather, rain and overcast days. James Madden from Exact Weather said of July there is a "high possibility of some sort of mega or super heatwave developing for an extended duration within this period," reports Birmingham Live.

WEATHER LATEST: Met Office's sad UK weather verdict - more like March than June

He went on: "Major heatwave or super heatwave still on target for mid-summer. Our earlier high-confidence forecast for a major heatwave or super heatwave is still on target to develop in or around mid-July for the UK and Ireland, and temperatures could still reach as high as the mid to high 30°C mark at the peak of this.

"With the prospects of a potential super heatwave on the cards during this summer, we can take a look back at our correct several month and week ahead forecasts for summer 2018 (the equal hottest summer on record) and the exact timing of the heatwaves and a heatwave of 'epic proportions' on our part, in addition to calling 'the hottest summer ever' quite far in advance."

Met Office long-range forecast

Saturday, June 15 to Monday, June 24

During the first weekend of this period, a mixture of sunny spells and showers is likely across the majority of the UK. Some of the showers are expected to be heavy and could be accompanied by thunder. Temperatures will probably be slightly below normal for the time of year. Into the following week, similar conditions are most probable at first with further showers. Later in the week and through the weekend, confidence in the dominate type of weather pattern is low. As such, fairly typical conditions for the UK are most probable, with a mixture of weather types. This means some spells of drier, sunny weather but also some showers or longer spells of rain at times. Temperatures will most likely be close to or slightly below average.

Tuesday, June 25 to Tuesday, July 9

There is little sign for any one type of weather pattern to dominate during this period. As such, typical conditions for the UK are most probable with a mixture of weather types. All areas can expected to see some spells of drier, sunnier weather, but there will also be showers or longer spells of rain at times. Temperatures are most likely to be close to or slightly above climatological average.
