Bruce Springsteen fans are being warned to expect heavy rain as they make their way to his concert in Sunderland on Wednesday.

The Boss will be at the Stadium of Light on May 22 when his huge European tour with The E Street Band heads to the North East. However, the weather on the day isn't looking great, with a yellow warning for rain issued.

The Met Office forecast shows heavy rain in Sunderland for the majority of the day. At the time of writing, it was due to rain from 5am on Wednesday morning, turning heavy from 6am and continuing till 9pm.

The showers ease off and become lighter after 9pm. The temperatures hover between 12C and 13C. Meanwhile, a yellow weather warning for rain has been issued for the whole of the North East.

The Met Office says that all areas of the region will be affected by heavy rain from 00.15 on Wednesday until 6am on Thursday morning (May 23). Heavy rain could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures, while delays or cancellations to train and bus services are also considered possible.

The weather experts warned: "An area of rain is expected to develop across eastern and central England and then move north-westwards to affect northern England and north Wales during Wednesday afternoon. The area of rain could then become slow moving, heavy and persistent, especially over north facing hills, before clearing during Thursday morning.

"There is a lot of uncertainty over exactly where the heaviest rain will occur and this warning is likely to be updated. Many places will see 30-40 mm of rain, while a few areas may receive 60-80 mm. There is also a small chance that a few upland areas could see much higher totals, in the order of 100-150 mm."

Here's the five-day forecast for the North East.

Tuesday:

Cloudy start for many, with mist patches, especially along the North Sea coast, although some brighter intervals possible. Cloud breaking to some warm sunny spells, and isolated showers, but remaining persistent along the coast where it will stay rather cool. Maximum temperature 17°C.

Tuesday night:

Low cloud spreading inland from North Sea coasts through the evening and overnight, with the odd spot of rain or drizzle. Perhaps some heavier bursts around dawn. Minimum temperature 10°C.

Wednesday:

Cloudy start for most, but soon turning wet and rather breezy, with rain spreading northwest. This turning persistent and heavy in places. Winds strengthening, especially along the coast. Feeling cool. Maximum temperature 14°C.

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday:

Cloudy Thursday with outbreaks of rain, heavy at times, gradually easing away. Likely drier Friday, but rather cloudy with the odd light shower possible. Fine Saturday, with warm sunny spells.
