Met Office weather warning as 55mph winds batter Lancashire

A weather warning has been issued by the Met Office with gusts of up to 55mph on the way.

Lancashire and the rest of the North West has been issued a yellow weather warning by forecasters until 10pm tonight (April 15). It is warning of 'probable' travel delays and 'short-term' power loss.

Heavy rain is also forecast throughout the region today with downpours expected around lunchtime and then later tonight. The adverse weather could also lead to tricky driving conditions, particularly for high-sided vehicles.

The Met Office warning states: "A depression will move east just to the north of Scotland through Monday and will bring a swath of strong winds to Northern Ireland, Wales and much of England. Gusts of between 40 and 45 mph are expected widely inland with isolated gusts as high as 50 to 55 mph on exposed coasts and near to heavier showers. This is likely to lead to some disruption and longer journey times.

"Winds will slowly ease through the evening and first part of Monday night."

It comes as Lancashire looks set to finally get a prolonged period of dry weather after what seems like one of the longest winters in memory. After a very rainy end to 2023 and start to 2024, things have been very unsettled thus far in April.

But some good news might be on the horizon as most of next week promises to be dry with a fair amount of sunshine across the UK. From Tuesday onwards, it looks like we’re in for a nice spell of dry weather, with the warmest day of the week coming next Sunday (April 21).

Here is the latest 5-day weather forecast from the Met Office:

Today:

Sunny spells and blustery showers, possibly heavy at times with hail, the odd rumble of thunder and some wintriness over the hills. Feeling noticeably chiller compared with recent days. Maximum temperature 9C.

Tonight:

Showers easing overnight and becoming largely dry though staying fairly windy overnight and feeling chilly still in the brisk winds. Minimum temperature 6C.

Tuesday:

A drier day with sunny spells, though the odd shower still possible. Another breezy day though winds much lighter than Monday. Feeling fresher than of late. Maximum temperature 10C.

Outlook for Wednesday to Friday:

Generally dry for the rest of the week though cloudy at times with some showers possible. Temperatures around the seasonal average and a noticeable fresher feel to the weather.
