Michael Beale could 'replace' Celtic favourite as former Rangers boss linked with shock managerial move

Former Rangers boss Michael Beale is set to be handed a shock return to management - but perhaps not quite where you would expect it to be.

The Englishman has been out of work since getting sacked by Sunderland back in February after just 12 games in charge at the Stadium of Light. That spell came just a few months after he was relieved of his duties at Ibrox after failing to qualify for the group stages of the Champions League and falling eight points behind eventual Premiership winners Celtic in the title race.

But according to The Scottish Sun, the 43-year-old is being lined up to replace former Hoops favourite Robbie Keane as the head coach of Israeli Premier League side Maccabi Tel Aviv. The report states that Beale's agents CAA Base have secured an interview for the role, despite concerns over security in the country as a result of the renewed conflict between Israel and Palestine.

Republic of Ireland legend Keane stepped down from the hot seat earlier this month after leading Tel Aviv to a league and cup double last season as well as the knockout rounds in the Conference League. The 43-year-old was criticised in some quarters for making the move to the Middle East but has described the experience as "unforgettable£.

After leaving the club, the ex striker, who netted 16 goals in 19 matches in a loan spell at Parkhead in 2010, said: “I want to thank the owners, all the players, the coaches, and the fans for making this season unforgettable.

“I am very proud of everything we achieved together as a team and especially proud of the hard work and the dedication that led to winning the championship and the Toto Cup.

“I wish everyone involved in the club the best of luck in the Champions League and the upcoming season.”
