Liverpool will receive a little under £2m towards their Financial Fair Play stability thanks to a contract clause rubber-stamped by Michael Edwards during his previous spell at the club.

Better still, Liverpool have not had to do any work to reap the sum. Kamil Grabara failed to play a senior game for Liverpool during his five years at the club, only making the first-team matchday squad for a League Cup tie in September 2018.

He was sold to FC Copenhagen for £3m in 2021, playing 126 games for the Danes which included wins over Manchester United and Galatasaray in last year’s Champions League run to the last-16.

The 25-year-old has now been snapped up by Bundesliga outfit Wolfsburg ahead of the new season, moving to Germany on an £11.6m deal that was first agreed last year. Edwards - Fenway Sport Groups’s new CEO of Football - was sporting director at Liverpool during Grabara’s 2021 exit deal, which contained a 20% sell-on clause for Liverpool.

It is understood that this applies to the profit Copenhagen would make on Grabara, rather than the overall sum. As a result, the Reds will see £1.72m enter their bank balance this summer.

Liverpool are not thought to be at any risk of breaching Premier League spending rules, but the extra cash will provide a further small buffer, as new head coach Arne Slot searches for new players in his maiden summer at Anfield.

He makes his Reds bow at the end of this month when Liverpool play their first pre-season friendly against Real Betis in Pennsylvania on July 27, by which time Slot may have made his first signing as boss.
