Michael Gove has sparked social media uproar… with his attempt to channel Stormzy.

Tory candidate Mr Gove, the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, tried to get the upper hand on Labour’s Angela Rayner after the grime artist backed Jeremy Corbyn in next month’s election.

Mr Gove had said Stormzy “is a far, far better rapper than he is a political analyst”.

Quoting this, Ms Rayner said on Twitter: “And Michael Gove is crap at both.” Mr Gove responded by saying: “I set trends dem man copy.”

The line was taken from Stormzy’s 2015 song “Shut Up”.

And, just over two weeks until the election, it was too much for some to handle.

Within an hour, there were more than 2,000 responses to Mr Gove’s tweet on Tuesday, with “this is the worst thing that’s ever happened”, “the worst tweet in political history” and “immediately sack your social media person” among the outraged comments.

Ms Rayner subsequently told Mr Gove: “Played ya self.”

Encouraging people to register to vote by Tuesday’s 11.59pm deadline, Stormzy had posted this message on Instagram on Monday.

Mr Gove had responded by telling Talk Radio on Tuesday morning: “I think we again know that Stormzy, when he took to the stage at Glastonbury wearing a stab vest, he made clear what his political views were then.”
