Mick Jagger and Donald Sutherland blast Donald Trump and Boris Johnson for 'lies' and 'ruining the world'

Mick Jagger and Donald Sutherland have condemned Donald Trump and Boris Johnson’s styles of leadership, calling out their “rudeness and lying”, and accusing them of “ruining the world”.

The Rolling Stones frontman and the veteran actor are the latest celebrities to speak out about the political situation in both the US and the UK, especially the impact on climate change by the US.

Jagger was speaking at the Venice Film Festival premiere of Burnt Orange Heresy, in which he plays an art dealer, when he blasted the Trump administration for eroding environmental protection.

He told The Hollywood Reporter: “We are in a very difficult situation at the moment, especially in the US, where all the environmental controls that were put in place – that were just about adequate – have been rolled back by the current administration so much that they are being wiped out.

“The US should be the world leader in environmental control but now it has decided to go the other way.”

A group of climate change activists had been protesting near the premiere and spray painted slogans on the red carpet, but Jagger said he was glad to see people cared enough to act.

He said: “I am so glad that people feel so strongly about that that they want to protest.

“I’m absolutely behind that. I’m glad they’re doing that because they’re the ones who are going to inherit the planet.”

Jagger wasn’t about to let the UK Prime Minister off the hook either, adding: “We are going through a very strange time at the minute. And when you live at a strange time you know it’s a strange time but you don’t know what’s going to happen.

“Values are different.There’s more polarisation and less civility.”

He went on: “In so many countries, including my own this last week… but particularly the US, it’s a bit of a sea change.

“I don’t mean that manners are everything. But the combination of all these things, where it’s going to lead us,(is) polarisation, rudeness and lying.”

His co-star Sutherland also accused Trump, Johnson, and Brazil’s Jair Bolsonaro of “ruining the world”.

He said: “When you’re my age, when you’re 85 years old and you have children and grandchildren, you will leave them nothing if we don’t vote those people out of office in Brazil, in London, in Washington.

“They are ruining the world. We have contributed to the ruination of it, but they are ensuring it.”
