Mickel Miller joins Huddersfield Town from Plymouth Argyle

Mickel Miller has joined Huddersfield Town as a free agent from Plymouth Argyle after declining the offer of a new contract from the Pilgrims.

Huddersfield were one of the teams relegated from the Championship last season as the Pilgrims narrowly avoided making the drop into League One. Miller has signed a two-year contract with the Terriers, who appointed former Cheltenham Town, Barnsley and Swansea City boss Michael Duff as their new head coach in May.

Miller told Huddersfield's official club website: "I’m really happy to be a Huddersfield Town player, and it didn’t take long for me to decide that this was the club I wanted to join this summer, despite other offers.

“Speaking to the sporting director (Mark Cartwright) and head coach showed me how much Town want to achieve, and that felt like something I wanted to be part of. I’m an ambitious person and the club shares that, which gives you a good feeling straight away.

“I’m looking forward to working hard, enjoying an exciting season with my new team and getting to know our supporters better at the John Smith’s Stadium."

Miller had been linked to a number of Championship clubs during the summer, including Steven Schumacher's Stoke City and Sheffield Wednesday, but in the end he has put pen to paper with Huddersfield, who will be among the League One promotion favourites next term.

Duff said: "Having coached against Mickel in the past, I know what a handful he can be going forward, but his diligence defensively is something that I find really impressive, too.

"Introducing players right at the start of pre-season gives the squad a real sense of refreshment and excitement, increasing competition for places and intensity in training right from the off. Having already enjoyed our sessions out on the grass, Mickel will again help raise that level."

Cartwright, Huddersfield's sporting director, added: "Mickel has been an player in demand this summer, so we’re really pleased that he’s bought into our ambition and chosen to join us ahead of the 2024/25 season.

"Someone we identified early on as having all of the tools and characteristics we wanted to introduce to the squad, his knowledge of this division and previous performances at not only his level but higher gives us real confidence."

Miller joined Argyle as a free agent from another Yorkshire club, Rotherham United, on a two-year contract in the summer of 2022. He went on to make a total of 29 starts and 20 substitute appearances.

He played mainly as a left wing-back for the Pilgrims, who replaced him earlier this summer with the signing of Nathanel Ogbeta from Championship rivals Swansea City.

Argyle posted on social media tonight: "Mickel Miller's contract has expired, and he has left Home Park to pursue an opportunity elsewhere. We thank Mickel for his contributions, and wish him well for his future career."

Miller said about Argyle on Instagram: "Forever in my heart, wishing the fans, players, coaches and staff nothing but the best, good luck next season."
