The Middle spin-off with Sue Heck is in the works

From Digital Spy

The Middle has officially finished production following its series finale last week, but ABC is looking to expand the Heck timeline with a spin-off focusing on Sue, played by Eden Sher.

Variety is reporting that The Middle creators Eileen Heisler and DeAnn Heline are attached to the new project, alongside Warner Bros. TV – although no contracts have been signed as of yet.

In the ninth and final season, socially awkward Sue was in college studying hotel management.

As for the finale, The Middle came to an emotional end in a two-parter last week (May 22) as we said farewell to the Heck family.

During the episode, the family went on a road trip after Axl (Charlie McDermott) revealed to parents Frankie (Patricia Heaton) and Mike (Neil Flynn) that he planned to take a job in Denver.

But co-creator Eileen Heisler did tease the possibility of revisiting the Hecks down the line.

"Our ratings have been great and ABC was very clear they did want more seasons – it was our decision to bring it to a close," she told Deadline. "And hey... I can't tell you what's next... gotta save it for the reboot. See you in 10 years!"

No doubt Eileen was only kidding about 10 years and this potential Sue spin-off would arrive much sooner... we think.

The Middle aired on ABC. Comedy Central airs the show in the UK.
