Yahoo News Middlesbrough Mela 2024: Huge names announced as bumper line-up is unveiled
A blockbuster line-up is in store a celebration of culture, music and diversity next month.
Albert Park will play host to the hugely popular Middlesbrough Mela which marks its 34th year over the weekend of August 17 and 18. The multicultural showcase attracts visitors from across the region and beyond for its mix of live performance, entertainment and mouth-watering food showcasing cuisines from across the globe.
And this year, visitors are promised a heady mix of high-profile South Asian artists, home-grown talent, dance acts and family favourites.
Sunday’s headliner Roach Killa is a household name making his mark in Bollywood, with hits including Main Tera Boyfriend for the film Raabta and Aa To Sahi For the hit film Judwa 2. His latest worldwide smash hit AA featuring Arif Lohar and Deep Jandu has had more than 130 million streams on Youtube.
Topping Saturday’s bill will be the Hussain Brothers Qawaali Group who carry on an 800-year-old tradition. Ustad Imran Ahmed’s teacher and grandfather Ustad Latafat Hussain Khan is also the teacher of the likes of the Sabri Brothers, Bashir Khan, Naushad Ali Khan and many more legendary artists of the Indian subcontinent.
Other acts to look out for across a packed weekend include award-winning singer-songwriter Roma Sagar, Birmingham-based duo Haseeb & Muki, British Asian actress, singer and model Rameet Sandhu and Bombay Funkadelic resident DJ Shai Guy.
BBC Radio Tees and Sunrise Radio will be the event’s broadcast partners and hosts on the Saturday and Sunday respectively, bringing a whole load of fun, frolics and freebies across the two-day extravaganza. The Mela is also renowned for its dazzling array of mouth-watering food and drink, not to mention a giant shopping bazaar, free workshops, huge funfair and children’s activities.
