Middlesbrough are said to be ready to make their move for Ryan Giles, with Hull City now expecting an incoming offer for the left-back.

Our sister site Hull Live have been told that Boro are ready to make their move for their well-known summer target officially, and a deal could be likely. Giles spent the season on loan at Boro in 2022-23 and is keen on a reunion with Michael Carrick this summer having enjoyed success at the Riverside under his guidance.

The 24-year-old signed for Hull this summer after an obligation in the loan deal with Luton Town in January meant they were forced to shell out £4 million. Boro won't be paying £4m for Giles, but there is increasing belief that Hull's current financial situation means that they are open to selling Giles.

Having gone hard to earn promotion in January, owner Acun Ilicali described their summer as like 'playing chess' and said they were likely to need to move five or six players on in order to be able to rebuild their squad, which has been left decimated by the end of loan deals this summer.

Giles is currently in training with new head coach Tim Walter, but is expected to be seen as a sellable asset at the MKM Stadium this summer having lost his place in the Tigers team towards the end of last season. He didn't start any of Liam Rosenior's final eight games in charge.

It was all part of a disappointing campaign for the Wolves academy graduate who instead of rejoining Boro last summer, chose to explore a Premier League opportunity at Luton. Having failed to make an impression there, he spent the second half of the season on loan at Hull.

Boro, meanwhile, turned attention to foreign markets to try and find an alternative for what was such a key component of Carrick's style of play at the Riverside. They brought in Lukas Engel from Denmark and Alex Bangura from the Netherlands. While both had some successes in their first season at the club, neither quite matched the impact that Giles had in a Boro shirt, when he managed 12 assists.

While Boro were happy to go into the new season with Engel and Bangura continuing as their left-back options, they were alerted to Giles' potential availability this summer owing to Hull's precarious situation. It was decided they would try to re-sign Giles, but only in a deal that worked for them.

Should they get it over the line, as is looking increasingly likely, it is expected that one of Engel or Bangura will depart. It's unknown whether that will be on a permanent basis or on loan at this stage, with both working hard to impress Carrick since returning for pre-season training this summer.
