Mike Flanagan: There’s an Easter Egg in One of My Shows That Fans Haven’t Caught Yet

Fans of the Flanaverse, activate your eagle eyes and cue up Netflix: There’s an Easter Egg in one of Mike Flanagan’s shows that viewers have not yet caught, the horror auteur said Friday.

His comments came during the “Book to Script to Screen” panel at ATX TV Festival in Austin, Texas. (Editor’s note: ATX TV Festival is owned by TVLine’s parent company, PMC.) In addition to Flanagan, participants in the panel — which was moderated by yours truly — included Silo creator Graham Yost, Black Mirror executive producer Jessica Rhoades, Interview With the Vampire creator Rolin Jones and Will Trent co-showrunners Liz Heldens and Daniel Thomsen.

Flanagan is the creator of several anthology horror series, including The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor and The Midnight Club. He revealed that the Easter Egg in question is in The Fall of the House of Usher, which was released in October 2023, but declined to identify exactly what the nod to the source material is and where it falls within the season.

“There is something we put in that someday, I want someone to organically see it,” Flagan told the crowd. “There’s a moment in Usher that no one’s ever [noticed].”

He joked that some of the online writing about the series picked up on references that he and his production team hadn’t even meant to include. “And people put these articles where they were breaking down all the Edgar Allan Poe references which were really, there was one or two in there that I was like, ‘Oh, really? Yeah, totally. We worked really hard on that,'” he said, laughing.

He added: “There’s one in particular that none of those articles caught. Someday, someone will get it. But I don’t want to ruin it.”

OK, Usher fans: Have at it! What’s your guess for the hidden wink that we’ve all missed so far? Hit the comments with your thoughts!
