Mindy Kaling's Enormous Train at the 2024 Met Gala Requires Multiple Handlers on the Red Carpet
The actress first attended the event in 2013 with pal B.J. Novak
Mindy Kaling was a walking piece of art at the 2024 Met Gala.
The star commanded attention in a voluminous, nude-colored strapless gown by Gaurav Gupta featuring sculptural pieces that arced over her head and cascaded down her back in a striking pattern of loops and swirls. It also had a train so enormous that Kaling needed multiple handlers to help her carry it as she made her way down the red carpet.
Despite its colossal size, the look managed to exude an ethereal aura with its floaty, sheer layers and curved draping details on the sweetheart-neckline bodice. The gown's fabric had subtle silver accents here and there for a touch of sparkle.
To keep the spotlight on her show-stopping dress, Kaling opted for understated glam, with the exception of a smokey eye, and had her short bob styled in soft curls at the ends.
Kaling, 44, made her first Met Gala appearance in 2013. On an episode of Meghan Markle’s Archetypes podcast, Kaling revealed that she felt “fraudulent” at her first met Gala appearance.
"I did feel like fraudulent the first year I went. I didn't know you were supposed to stay uptown near the Met. You're supposed to get in a standing van so your dress didn't wrinkle. I was just in a cab, in my dress, sitting in the backseat of a car, you know, driving for 45 minutes,” the Mindy Project creator and star recounted.
That year, Kaling wore a deep magenta Lela Rose dress, in line with the 2013 Met Gala theme of "PUNK: Chaos to Couture." Kaling attended the event with her good friend, fellow Office star and writer for The Mindy Project B.J. Novak.
"We woulda gone punk even if it wasn't the theme," she captioned an Instagram selfie with Novak from the event.

At the 2023 Met Gala, Kaling shimmered in an eye-catching silver Jonathan Simkhai dress featuring a silver mesh underskirt and floor-length fringe accent in the back. She pulled her hair back in a sleek ponytail and finished off the look with a few diamond jewelry accents.
