Lawns are often the pride of a garden, with many people aiming for that perfect deep green turf.

It's not just about growth when it comes to fertiliser; it's about cultivating an area resilient enough to stand up to nature and time.

A well-maintained lawn is your best protection against pests, diseases, and various environmental pressures.

Experts at The Lawn Squad highlight that coffee isn't only vital for our morning routine but also for our lawns.

They explained: "Nitrogen-rich coffee grounds can be sprinkled on the lawn or mixed with water (about half a pound of coffee grounds to five gallons of water) to create a nutrient-packed lawn tonic.", reports the Express.

Echoing this sentiment, the lawn aficionados at Turf Technologies remarked: "Not only can coffee revitalise us in the morning, it can also revitalise our lawns."

They added: "For us, it's the caffeine that does the magic. For your lawn, it's the minerals coffee contains - nitrogen and phosphorus - that does the magic."

The boost to grass growth doesn't come from caffeine but from the nitrogen, phosphorus, and trace minerals found in coffee grounds.

Using coffee grounds on your lawn comes with several advantages, one being that unlike synthetic fertilisers, which can cause issues like burning the grass or leading to water contamination if applied incorrectly, "coffee grounds have no such adverse effects".

The specialists underscored the benefits of coffee grounds as a fertiliser, noting: "This allows your lawn to benefit from the nutrients for a longer period of time, ensuring greener, thicker and stronger turf for longer."

Additionally, they highlighted the appeal these grounds have to earthworms, describing the process by which the worms not only consume the grounds but also help to aerate the lawn with their castings, thus naturally improving soil structure and boosting grass growth.

To apply coffee grounds to your garden, the experts suggest a casual approach: simply scatter them across the lawn and let them sit.

As a result of natural activity or during routine mowing, the grounds will integrate into the soil.

For even distribution without clumping, it's recommended to gently rake or sweep the grounds across the grass or to use a bucket with holes or a spreader to scatter them more uniformly.

For optimal results and a lush lawn, the guidance concludes with recommending reapplication of this homemade coffee ground fertiliser every one to two months.
