A massive search is under way for an Argentine submarine that went missing with 44 sailors on board more than a week ago.

The search entered a "critical phase" on Wednesday as officials said a sound recorded near where the vessel disappeared was “consistent with an explosion”.

The ARA San Juan and its crew of 44 have been missing since November 16 after disappearing about 300 miles from Argentina’s southern coast following a battery failure.

A Navy spokesman said today an “abnormal, short, violent, non-nuclear event” had been detected in the south Atlantic around that time.

Meanwhile Navy and outside experts said, if the sub remained intact, the oxygen stored on board for the crew would only last seven to 10 days.
