Modern Family favourite Eric Stonestreet has landed his next big role: as evil Santa in Disney+'s The Santa Clauses season 2.

Best known for playing Cameron in the ABC sitcom Modern Family, the actor has joined the festive TV follow-up as Magnus Antas, also known as the Mad Santa (via Deadline).

The second season will focus on Tim Allen's Scott Calvin as he continues to work as Santa Claus after failing to retire and find a replacement — although he's trying to train his son Cal up to take over the mantle.

That's when Magnus, the Santa from the 14th century, reappears on the scene and has plans to reclaim the North Pole as his.

The Mysterious Benedict Society's Marta Kessler joins the cast as Magnus' sidekick gnome Olga, who has a take-no-prisoners attitude and doesn't really understand feelings or empathy.

When the show was renewed for a second season, Disney Branded Television president Ayo Davis said in a statement: "This franchise has had a lasting impact for so many families, truly becoming part of their annual holiday traditions.

"Bringing it back as a series has been a true gift, and I'm grateful to our producing partners at 20th Television and, of course, Tim Allen and team, that we have yet another reason to celebrate this holiday season."

The Santa Clauses follows on from the original film from 1994 and two sequel films that followed in 2002 and 2006, respectively.

Meanwhile, Tim Allen recently confirmed that he was reprising his other big Disney role: Buzz Lightyear, in the newly announced Toy Story 5.

"See ya soon Woody, you are a sad strange little man and you have my pity. And off we go to a number 5!" he tweeted. "To infinity and beyond!"

The Santa Clauses is available to stream on Disney+.
