Update: Sitcom fans will definitely be losing The Big Bang Theory next year, but it looks like Modern Family will be sticking around at least into 2020.

Following news earlier this year that showrunner Christopher Lloyd was hoping to keep the cast on board for at least a shortened 11th and final season beyond this year, Deadline reports that Lloyd's goal is very close to becoming a reality.

Specifically, main cast members Sofia Vergara, Ed O’Neill, Ty Burrell, Julie Bowen, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet are all in final negotiations to sign on for an 18-episode season to wrap up the show.

Negotiations are also reportedly beginning with the younger cast and writers, in hopes of ABC announcing an official renewal in the very near future. Neither ABC or production company 20th Century Fox Television have yet commented on these latest reports.

Original: Modern Family now looks like it could end after an 11th season.

It was previously thought that the hit ABC comedy series would conclude after its 10th run, but Deadline is now reporting that talks are under way for one final, shorter season.

Back in August, showrunner Christopher Lloyd spoke about the possibility of an 11th outing, saying: "We are very open to it – we have expressed that to ABC."

He said it was while planning season 10 they "found out that [they] were getting into some very rich new areas with these characters, that there is a lot more to explore in the series".

Lloyd then wanted to know if season 10 would be the show's last, saying: "We need to know relatively soon if it's the last season so we can both recognise the show but also recognise the people who have been together for 10 years."

Season 10 is now deep into production, but fans can take heart that it might not be the last.

They may be slightly distressed to learn, however, that season 10 is going to kill off a "significant character".

Lloyd previously teased: "We do deal with a death, which is certainly a topic that families have to deal with, and on television, it's not easy to do because that's a heavy subject. But at the same time, it would seem unusual for a family not to go through it."

Modern Family season 10 premieres on September 26 at 9pm on ABC.
