Modern Family actress Julie Bowen has joined the cast of thriller series Hysteria!

Originally commissioned back in August of last year, this coming-of-age tale is written by Matthew Scott Kane while Kong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts handles the first episode, according to Variety.

Bowen is best known in the TV landscape for her double Emmy Award-winning performance as Claire Dunphy, and boasts big screen credits alongside Adam Sandler in cult comedy Happy Gilmore and Hubie Halloween.

According to US streaming platform Peacock, which recently premiered Rian Johnson's weekly whodunnit Poker Face, its new show "explores American's dark history of mass hysteria through the shocking story of the teenage Satanic Panic, a struggling high-school heavy metal band of outcasts in the '80s.

"As a group, they realise they can capitalise on the town's sudden interest in the occult by building a reputation as a Satanic metal band, until a bizarre series of murders, kidnappings, and reported supernatural activity triggers a leather-studded witch hunt that leads directly back to them."

Bowen is onboard as Linda Campbell - mother to one of the teenage pariahs - who herself encounters supernatural disturbances that force her to question everything she knows about her child.

This comes after Peacock renewed Paris Hilton's reality programme Paris in Love for a second season earlier in the year.

"I'm thrilled to be back on Peacock for another season of Paris in Love," said the media personality in a statement.

"It was so special to share the ups and downs of our love story in the lead up to our incredible wedding. As Carter [Reum] and I embark on this new chapter of our lives as parents, I can't wait to give fans a peek into #sliving with my amazing husband and sweet baby boy."

Hysteria! will stream on Peacock in the US.
