Rishi Sunak was mocked by a Youtube star as he conceded his General Election defeat, and it was all caught on national TV.

Mr Sunak spoke as he was re-elected in his Richmond and Northallerton constituency shortly before 5am on Friday (July 5). Despite winning his seat, the outgoing prime minister apologised for the loss.

As he did, Youtuber Niko Omilana, who also stood for the Richmond and Northallerton seat, held up a piece of paper with the letter "L" printed on it. "L" is known to mean loser or lost, often used to signal humiliation or embarrassment.

Omilana, who stood as an independent, only managed to receive 160 votes, while Mr Sunak held on to the seat with 23,059 votes. But his stunt was captured live on television, with the camera operator then appearing to zoom in on Mr Sunak so as to keep Omana's sign out of shot.

Taking to X, formerly Twitter, afterwards Omilana shared a photo and simply said: "farewell rishi, hold this L". The social media post has since been viewed millions of times, with thousands of shares, likes, and replies.

As he won his seat, a glum Mr Sunak said: "The Labour Party has won this general election and I have called Keir Starmer to congratulate him". The Prime Minister added that the British people had delivered a "sobering verdict" on the Conservatives.
