Moms are turning their old wedding dresses into rehearsal dresses for their daughters, and TikTok is obsessed

Moms are giving their ’80s and ’90s wedding dresses stunning makeovers in an adorable new trend — one that’s quickly gaining popularity thanks to TikTok.

In an attempt to pass down their wedding gowns without imposing their style upon the brides-to-be, moms are turning their retro dresses into stunning rehearsal dresses, thus still giving their gowns a special place in their daughters’ big day.

And thanks to the skills of talented bridal designers, these vintage gowns still maintain all their former charm and character while receiving a more modern, trendy upgrade, perfect for a 2023 bride.

Now, much like the teen who transformed a thrifted vintage wedding dress into a stunning pink vision for prom, these dress makeovers are going viral on TikTok.

Lovell Faye Bridal (@lovellfayebridal) is one such bridal designer who’s helping brides-to-be pay tribute to their moms’ vintage wedding dresses, and she captures the whole process on her TikTok account.

“Everyone loves the tradition of ‘something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue,'” Lovell writes on her website.

“Freeing your mothers wedding dress from storage and incorporating it into your wedding wardrobe is a touching and unique way to pay tribute to the tradition and celebrate in style.”

According to Lovell, brides come to her with many different requests.

“They want to modernize their mother’s wedding dress for their own rehearsal or bridal shower, want to make a gift that will last a lifetime or want a special way to honor the memory of their mother or grandmother,” she writes on her website.

Another bridal designer, @unboxthedress, helps transform heirloom gowns into stunning bridal robes. For one mother of the bride, she wanted to pass down her dress without imposing upon her daughter — and thus, a viral TikTok was born.

And while many of the heirloom dresses only date back to the ’80s and ’90s, some are go back further than that.

With the help of her bridal designer, bride @brittanyltibbs was able to transform a third-generation wedding dress into a stunningly modern — yet still charming — rehearsal dress.

Her TikTok capturing her mom’s reaction to the dress gained a whopping 6 million views, proving this wedding dress trend is taking off online.

TikTokers seem totally taken by the idea of paying tribute to moms’ old dresses in this creative way.

“love this idea vs just sitting in a box rotting,” commented @jamzitto.

“Now that is the way to reuse a wedding gown,” commented @rnmama6.

“love how you kept the vintage look,” user @entjbb wrote.

“Something else that can be done with a wedding dress is make it into a christening gown,” @notgivingupyet02 suggested.

“Mine was remade into a flower girls dress for my daughter’s wedding!” suggested @lindaeverhart2 (something that @unboxthedress actually does).

Hopefully, thanks to this new wedding dress trend, we’ll see more vintage and heirloom gowns come out of storage and get a second chance at life in modern weddings!
