More than 300 ice creams handed out on hottest day of year

More than 300 ice creams were handed out at a science park as the country experienced its hottest day of the year so far.

Wednesday was the hottest day of the year so far, the Met Office said, with temperatures hitting the late 20s in Oxfordshire.

And on the day, Milton Park, a technology and science park near Didcot gave away over 300 artisan Lola Ice Creams to “celebrate the start of the summer”.

Across the country, the highest temperature recorded was 30.3C at Heathrow Airport.

The previous hottest day of the year was Tuesday, which saw a high of 30C recorded in Chertsey in Surrey.

It came as the NHS said visits to its online heat exhaustion advice page have soared in the past 48 hours.

Met Office meteorologist Kathryn Chalk said the last time 30c was recorded in the UK was on September 10 last year.

The Met Office predicted that there is a bit more chance of heatwaves in the period between Thursday, July 11 and Thursday, July 25.

It said: “Typical of the time of year, predictability at this range is very low compared with, say, the winter half of the year, thus forecast confidence is very low.

“That said, current indications suggest that a continuation of the trend towards more settled weather through mid-July is weakly favoured, with below average rainfall and temperatures around to a little above average.

“Any more significant rainfall would most likely be in the northwest, and in thunderstorms elsewhere. There is a slightly higher than normal chance of heatwaves developing through this period.”
