More big changes for passengers at East Midlands Airport
Passengers travelling to and from East Midlands Airport (EMA) over the spring bank holiday and during the summer will benefit from a host of upgrades, bosses have said. "Modern, stylish seating" has been installed in the departure lounge, along with a tree sculpture equipped with phone charging points.
The revamped seating area is located near a newly opened JD Sports store, the largest retail unit in the terminal, while a smaller unit vacated by JD Sports will soon house new bar The Yard, a spokesperson said. The airport has 500 new trolleys for travellers to use, and "improved customer Wi-Fi is set to be launched across the terminal next month".
The latest changes follow the refurbishment of the Castle Rock Bar & Kitchen earlier this year, as well as the addition of new baby changing facilities, Changing Place toilets and a prayer room in the departure lounge, and are part of a £120m investment plan for EMA over the next five years, which also includes upgrades to the runway and taxiways, as well as the installation of "state-of-the-art" air traffic control equipment, the spokesperson added.

"Work has already begun on expanding the security hall in preparation for the installation of the latest scanners, set to be operational next year. In the meantime, existing security measures remain in place, ensuring most passengers clear security in under 15 minutes," said the spokesman.
Steve Griffiths, EMA's managing director, said: "We've been working hard to get ready for our busiest time of the year, with a wide range of improvements ready for people to enjoy before getting away to their favourite European destinations. From new bars and shops and more seating to extra trolleys and new toilets, it's all designed to build on our commitment to provide an effortless experience for our customers."
Some 328,000 passengers used the Leicestershire airport last month alone, said the spokesperson. Passenger numbers exceeded four million for the first time since the pandemic, they added.
