An appeal has gone out to the Suffolk business community to sign up to the Armed Forces Covenant in a passionate call to action.

Currently, fewer than 1pc of businesses registered in the county pledge their support to this agreement which offers fair treatment to serving or past members of the armed forces and their families.

The joint appeal for increased signatories comes from the Suffolk Chamber of Commerce and Combat2Coffee, a social enterprise dedicated to veterans.

Out of 30,945 businesses registered in Suffolk, 151, or 0.48pc, have made the commitment.

The Armed Forces Covenant seeks to ensure equal provision of commercial and public services for the military community.

It also asks for added consideration in unique cases involving bereaved or injured personnel.

The call to action comes alongside the launch of the 'Beyond the Uniform' campaign by Combat2Coffee, spearheaded by football legend Terry Butcher.

Nigel Seaman, Combat2Coffee’s founder and Royal Anglian veteran, said: "The Armed Forces Covenant is all about ensuring we treat our armed forces community with the respect they deserve beyond the uniform."

Honouring this commitment not only demonstrates support for transitioning veterans, but it also sends a clear message to those struggling in civilian life.

Mr Seaman said: “Displaying the Armed Forces Covenant badge on your website or in your shop window sends a message to veterans like me that you care.”

This sentiment is echoed by the Suffolk Chamber of Commerce, which has supported the initiative since 2019.

Chief executive John Dugmore said: “Signing the Armed Forces Covenant is a vital step in ensuring that these individuals are treated with fairness and respect."

Companies seeking to sign the covenant can find more information online or reach out to Combat2Coffee directly.

The call to action firmly places the ball in the court of local businesses, a chance to pledge true support to those who have served their country.
