Ruth Langsford has denied making a dig at fellow presenter Alison Hammond.

The This Morning host recently gave an interview where she discussed the long careers her and husband Eamonn Holmes have had.

"We've put the work in. We didn't do a reality show and get an overnight job on the telly," she told Sunday's Mirror Notebook.

"We've come up through the ranks. Eamonn was only 19 when he started out. And he was doing the teatime news in Belfast during The Troubles.

"It was heavy stuff. And he's now got an OBE for services to broadcasting."

Some thought it was a swipe at Alison, who is rumoured to be taking over Ruth and Eamonn's Friday presenting duties alongside Dermot O'Leary.

A spokesperson for Ruth defends her comments telling the Daily Mail: "The comments from Ruth were made as a general observation in an interview conducted more than six weeks ago, about the industry and different routes into the business.

"Ruth was simply illustrating a point that whereas some presenters launch their careers by being on other TV programmes first, her and Eamonn's experience and career paths had taken a different and more traditional path.

"This wasn't directed at anyone in particular – indeed she has always been supportive of a number of her professional colleagues and friends who have taken this route."

Alison first found fame when she took part in Big Brother back in 2002, going on to star in I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! and Strictly Come Dancing.

She recently took over This Morning as guest editor, deciding all the topics for the day.

"There will be nothing about lockdown or coronavirus," she said at the time.

"There'll be a lot of recipes and food... and maybe a little bit of fashion and fun. It's going to be great and I'm excited to be the boss."

This Morning airs on weekdays at 10am on ITV.
