Morrisons is set to roll out brand-new children's trolleys and checkouts at stores across the UK after a highly-successful trial. The mini trolleys look like the supermarket's regular sized ones, complete with a long pole and white plastic flag so people can keep an eye on their kids when shopping in store.

Child checkouts are supervised by a Morrisons staff member at all times, who will show children how to scan their shopping. It comes after the leading supermarket launched a trial a few weeks ago at a number of stores, but has since confirmed that it will be rolled out nationwide.

A Morrisons spokesperson said that it will allow children to join in with the shopping experience, adding: "We can confirm that we are introducing Child Friendly checkouts into our stores. We want customers of all ages to enjoy shopping at Morrisons and know our younger shoppers are often keen to help out at the tills so we welcome them to have a go next time they’re in our stores."

The Mirror reports that one participating store in the trial was in Shrewsbury, who announced the scheme on its Community Champions page. It wrote: "We will be introducing our new kids checkout where your children can be supervised by one of our amazing colleagues, to scan all the parents/guardians shopping through the till, if this is something you would like your little ones to take part in and it is unmanned please ask a member of the checkouts team, they will be happy to help."

And parents loved the idea, with one noting how their youngster always gets bored when they get to the checkout. They said: "It's at this point where the kids get bored - so why not give them something to look forward to and they will be doing something they may feel useful at. At least they're not just being given an ipad and then kicking off when the battery has ran out."

Another noted how the idea was a 'great incentive for good behaviour', adding: "Tell the kids if they are good while shopping then they can use the till and put it through," while a third, explained: "I love this idea. Not only does it give a child something to do, it helps develop their independence, thinking skills and understanding.

"My son is 3 now we let him scan our shopping, bus passes and others he loves it and feels proud of himself it's just like the shopping trolleys in lidl he gets one and does our shopping with us."

A fourth, went on: "Seems many adults forget they were children once and they also played with toy checkouts. They would have been buzzing their little heads off if they had this opportunity to use a real till, as I know I would."
