More Britons want Donald Trump to visit the UK than don’t, a poll has found,

A YouGov survey for The Times found that 49 per cent of Brits want the new, controversial US president to visit with just 36 per cent opposed.

The findings come despite more than 1.7 million people signing an online petition earlier this week, demanding that Trump not be allowed to make a State visit to the UK later this year as it would “it would cause embarrassment to Her Majesty the Queen”.

Trump was invited to the UK by Prime Minster Theresa May last week when she visited Washington.

So far, May has resisted pressure to call off the invitation, claiming she is “very happy” for Trump to visit.

Opposition to Trump’s potential visit has grown since he announced a ban on travelling to the US of people from seven Muslim countries.

The Executive Order announced by Trump banned all immigration from Somalia, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Sudan, Libya and Yemen for 90 days.

A further poll showed that 50 per cent of Britons thought the migrant ban was a bad idea, with only 29 per cent supporting it.
