A supermarket that's worked out most expensive for key essentials since the beginning of March is now among the cheapest.

Every week we look at the price of the same eight staples at the six main supermarkets to see how they compare.

It's something we've done for two years now, since the cost of living crisis first took hold, and Lidl has come out cheapest for the majority of that time.

Now, after five weeks as the 'most expensive' retailer, Tesco is now third cheapest for the shopping basket, coming in at £12.22, behind Lidl's £12.02 and Aldi's £12.14.

The change is the result of Tesco dropping the price of its 300g pack of chicken breasts from £2.60 to £2.35, a cut of almost 10%.

It means that Morrisons has now taken the most expensive spot, at £12.37 for the basket, followed by Asda and Sainsbury's, both at £12.33.

Aldi disputes the results of our weekly comparison, saying that it does not take into account like-for-like products or ‘the higher quality’ of its products. The supermarket says, for example, that Aldi beans are 20g heavier than Sainsbury's and that Aldi teabags are 'better quality than the comparative products used'.

Asda also disagrees with our comparison and says that our small sample of products does not represent the fuller picture of prices and does not account for its deals. The supermarket says that, across the board, its Just Essentials range is the largest and cheapest available, alongside Aldi's.
