Most popular baby names in Teesside and the North east

George, Arthur, Luca and Mohammad are the most popular baby boy names on Teesside - while Freya, Olivia and Willow come out on top for girls monikers.

The latest figures - from the Office of National Statistics 2022 figures, show Middlesbrough Council's register office recorded 15 boys called Luca and 15 called Mohammad. There were 12 girls named Olivia.

In Redcar and Cleveland, 15 baby boys were named Arthur, and 11 girls called Willow - while in Stockton, there were 20 George's welcomed into the world and 17 Freyas.

Hartlepool parents love the named Arthur the most - with 14 little cherubs called that, with Isla and Lily neck and neck with eight babies each taking that name. In Darlington, Thomas and Grace were most popular - with 13 little ones labelled Thomas and nine as Grace.

North east youngsters

Looking further afield to the North east region, Noah and Olivia ranked the most popular names for newborn babies.

There were a total of 169 baby girls given the name Olivia in 2022, according to new figures from the Office for National Statistics. Amelia was the next most popular girl’s name, with 149 newborns. That’s followed by Freya with 133, Ivy with 129, and Isla with 123.

Noah is the most popular name for newborn boys, with 207 babies receiving that name in 2022. George is the next most popular name for boys with 187, followed by Theo with 183, Oliver with 177, and Archie with 169. Noah and Olivier are also the most popular names nationally.

There were 4,586 baby boys given the name Noah in 2022, and 3,289 girls given the name Olivia. Muhammad was the second most popular name for boys (4,177), followed by George (3,699). Amelia was the second most popular name for girls (2,884), followed by Isla (2,613).

Noah is the top boy’s name in four regions of the country - the North East, the East Midlands, the East of England, and Wales. Muhammad, meanwhile, is top in the North West, Yorkshire and the Humber, the West Midlands, and London. George tops the list in the South East, while in the South West it’s Arthur.

Olivia is the top girl’s name in every region of the country except London where it’s Amelia. Amelia is second in every region with the exceptions of London (Olivia), the South East (Isla), the South West (Florence) and Wales (Isla).
