A man has been taken to hospital after he was injured when he fell down a ravine.

Northumberland National Park and North of Tyne Mountain Rescue teams were called to Greenside on Wednesday afternoon to assist paramedics at a "difficult to access" location on Coalway Lane. The man was reported to have fallen into a ravine and was in a great deal of pain from his injuries.

Team members local to the incident arrived at Bradley Fell Road and determined the equipment required for the evacuation. The casualty was carried for 30 metres on a stretcher, before being attached to wheels and pushed for the remaining 1.25km evacuation to the nearest road.

Mountain rescue teams, from which 22 members were present, handed the casualty over to the North East Ambulance Service before being stood down. The casualty was taken on to Queen Elizabeth (QE) hospital for treatment.

A post on the Northumberland National Park Mountain Rescue Team read: "A very unfortunate accident and we wish the man well for a full and speedy recovery. The incident involved 22 members for 3 hours 20 minutes."

A spokesperson from the North East Ambulance Service said: "We received a call at 2.40pm on Wednesday, July 3 to reports of a person unwell near Greenside. We dispatched an ambulance crew and requested the support of our colleagues at the North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Service team. One patient was taken to the Queen Elizabeth (QE) Hospital in Gateshead for further treatment."
