Mountain rescue teams and police helicopter called to find missing autistic boy, 9, last seen at Rivington Pike

UPDATE: James has now been found safe and well, Lancashire Police have confirmed.

An urgent appeal has been launched to find a missing nine-year-old boy last seen at Rivington Pike. James, whose surname has not been disclosed, was last seen at around 12.30pm on Sunday (April 28).

Lancashire Police said officers are 'really concerned' for the welfare of the schoolboy, who is autistic and mostly non-verbal. He was last seen wearing a black helmet with blue and white stripes, a black coat that says 'adventure' on the sleeve and blue sports trousers.

He is described as being around 4ft tall, of an average build, with blonde hair. A major search has been launched with pictures of James circulated as part of the public appeal.

Specialist mountain rescue teams and police helicopters have also been deployed. Anyone with any information is being urged to contact police immediately.

"James was last seen at Rivington Pike, at 12:30 today riding a blue bike. When he was last seen, he was wearing a black helmet with blue and white stripes, black coat that says 'adventure' on the sleeve and blue sports trousers. He is described as 4FT, of average build with blonde hair. Please be aware that James is autistic and is mainly non verbal.

"We have a dedicated team of officers out looking for James and we are working with partners like mountain rescue and the police helicopter to reunite James with his family.

"If you have seen James today or know where he is, please approach one of our officers or contact us on 999 quoting LC-20240428-0891."
