Team of 21 mountain rescuers carry injured walker to safety

A 21-strong mountain rescue team rushed to the aid of a man stranded while walking a national trail on the North York Moors.

The team was called out just before noon on Saturday after the man suffered an ankle injury.

Cleveland Mountain Rescue Team said it was contacted by North Yorkshire Police with a report that the man had suffered an injury near Carlton-in-Cleveland while walking on the Cleveland Way National Trail on the North York Moors National Park.

The man's friend managed to give his exact location using What3Words so the team could find him.

The first of the 21 rescuers involved went as far as they could by car before walking up the Cleveland Way to reach the man, gradually joined by other members.

They then carried the casualty around 600m on a stretcher to a Land Rover then he was driven to hospital.

In a post on Facebook about the rescue, Cleveland Mountain Rescue said: "We were contacted by North Yorkshire Police with a report that a man had sustained an ankle injury whilst walking on the Cleveland Way National Trail about 2-Km east of Lordstones Cafe on the North York Moors National Park.

The post went on: "Our call-out officer contacted the man’s friend to confirm the location and to check the casualty’s condition. They had provided an accurate location to the Police using the What3Words App, were able to provide good information to the team and were well equipped to keep the casualty warm.

"After the first members arrived at the RV-point on farmland they continued on as far as they could by car, then walked up the Cleveland Way to reach the casualty, gradually being joined by other members as they arrived (who took with them further medical and rescue equipment).

"After providing pain relief and stabilising the injury, the casualty was carried about 600-metres on a rescue stretcher to our Land Rover and driven back to the RV-point from where he was taken to hospital. We wish him well for his recovery."

The team said 21 team members were involved for around two-and-a-half hours plus more time for travel and for preparing the vehicle.
