Outdoor gear retailer Mountain Warehouse is climbing back into Plymouth’s Drake Circus Shopping Centre just a year after it moved out. The store is due to open soon in the large upper mall unit which has been empty since Topshop went to the wall in 2021.

Mountain Warehouse’s new outlet will be its largest branch in the South West. The company decamped from Plymouth’s mall in April last year, with cosmetics chain Rituals occupying the lower mall space just a month later.

At the time, Mountain Warehouse said it was taking the opportunity to look elsewhere in Plymouth. There has been speculation it was looking for a larger unit, possibly out of town, but now it has found a sizable home in units 43 and 44, sandwiched between Fatface and River Island.

It is set to open “in the coming months” and will feature a range of womenswear, menswear, kidswear and outdoor equipment. A Mountain Warehouse spokesperson said: “We’re delighted to be opening a store at Drake Circus, and excited to share our passion for adventure and great value outdoor gear for all the family, even the dog!”

Greg Lumley, centre director at Drake Circus and The Barcode, said: “We’re pleased to announce Mountain Warehouse will be coming to the centre. I’m sure the store will be a huge hit with our visitors, especially as we head into the spring and summer months.

“We’re always looking to expand our range of retailers to give visitors everything they need in one place, and we’ve no doubt that our latest addition will do just that.”

The return of Mountain Warehouse means the British Land-owned mall is nearly full again. Only the former Jack Wills unit in the Upper Mall remains unoccupied, after the clothing chain pulled out in January. On the top floor, the former Cafe Curva space is still empty but reportedly under offer.

The Barcode, also British Land-owned, is also filling up with restaurant Franco Manca the most recent arrival. There is only one ground floor unit and the Sky Bar are currently vacant.
