Travel plans are being altered, ministerial meetings in Westminster are being cancelled, as Rishi Sunak has now finally called the much-anticipated General Election for July 4 - and with more than 100 MPs throwing in the towel at this election, including a former Prime Minister, the next parliament will look very different.

In an early sign that Prime Minister Rishi Sunak was going to call the election today, one senior Conservative standing down at the next election was seen hugging colleagues and saying goodbye, according to BBC Political Editor Chris Mason. Of the MPs not standing or re-election, the vast majority are from the Conservative Party, which is currently behind in the polls by double digits.

Following a politically difficult five years with three Tory Prime Ministers and the world lurching from war to disaster, it should come as little surprise that many MPs are looking forward to a life outside of Westminster - including prominent politicians like Theresa May, and scores of former frontbench ministers like Sajid Javid and Matt Hancock.

Some of the House of Commons' longest-serving MPs will be stepping back after decades of public service at this year's General Election, with well-known names like Harriet Harman Dame Margaret Hodge, Bill Cash, and Caroline Lucas passing the baton to the next generation of MPs.
