MTV's Movie and TV Awards won't be going ahead for 2024

The MTV Movie and TV Awards ceremony has been put on hold for 2024. It comes as the event will be undergoing makeover, and isn't expected to return until 2025.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, a source claimed the show will be coming back next year with a new ‘reimagined’ format. Last year, the awards ceremony aired amid the Writers Guild of America strikes, with host Drew Barrymore dropping out in solidarity with the strikes.

The ceremony showed pre-recorded segments and acceptance speeches, as well as clips from various TV programmes and films nominated. Categories, nominees and winners were all announced via a voiceover.

No reason has been given as to why the awards show has been postponed, according to MailOnline. When Drew Barrymore dropped out as host last year, it was agreed she would not return to host the 2024 edition.

At the time, she said: “I have listened to the writers, and in order to truly respect them, I will pivot from hosting the MTV Movie and TV Awards live in solidarity with the strike. Everything we celebrate and honour about movies and television is born out of their creation.

“And until a solution is reached, I am choosing to wait but I’ll be watching from home and hope you will join me. I thank MTV, who has truly been some of the best partners I have ever worked with.

“And I can’t wait to be a part of this next year, when I can truly celebrate everything that MTV has created, which is a show that allows fans to choose who the awards go to and is truly inclusive.”

Big winners from last year’s show included HBO’s The Last of Us, Scream VI, Top Gun: Maverick, and Wednesday. Hollywood legend Jennifer Coolidge was also presented with the Comedic Genius Award in honour of her career.
