Multiple explosions as fire rips through North Wales chemical plant

Loud explosions rocked a North Wales community after a massive fire broke out at a chemical factory. Police told residents to keep all their doors and windows closed and North Wales Fire and Rescue Service rushed to the Synthite factory on Denbigh Road, Mold.

The incident started at around 2pm today. Videos and photos from the scene show roaring flames rising through the roof of the factory. Local councillor Brian Lloyd started to walk to the factory to investigate after reports of a fire.

He was turned back and told to return home and close his windows and doors. The councillor heard several explosions from the site. Follow our liveblog on the fire here

Cllr Lloyd said he hoped everyone was safe and praised the emergency services for their rapid response. He said: "It is scary for the community but fair play to the emergency services, they have been very quick to respond to this. They are doing a great job." Intermittent explosions could be heard and a witness said he heard around eight or nine blasts. The police closed part of the A451 following the incident.

A woman said she rushed to pick up her partner from a nearby company, adding that the building where he works was "quickly evacuated" alongside others in the area.

Some homes have also been evacuated.

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were called at 14.06 to a fire at a factory on Denbigh Road, Mold. Four crews, the Incident Command Unit, the Hazardous material Unit and the aerial ladder Platform are in attendance tackling reports of a fire in the production area.

"Local residents are being asked to close windows and doors and avoid the area due to smoke and as a precautionary measure."

North Wales Police earlier posted: "Due to an ongoing incident at Synthite in Mold can all residents in the Mold area please keep their doors and windows closed. Note that the A541 is closed from the junction with Dreflan to the junction with Black Brook Road Rhyd y Goleu."

A Synthite spokesperson said: “We can confirm that there has been an incident at Synthite, Alyn Works, Denbigh Road, Mold. We are assisting the emergency services accordingly and we will issue more details when further information is available.”
