A family says they spent less than the cost of a trip to a UK theme park for a brilliant day out in Paris.

Mum-of-two Stefanie Curran jetted off to Paris with her kids for her 40th birthday as she claimed it was cheaper than a local UK attraction.

Stefanie, 40, and her sons Brody, 11, and Romeo, seven, managed a whirlwind tour of Paris after realising a week-long holiday was financially out of reach, reports Wales Online.

Each return flight set them back £55 while they filled their day with sightseeing, pastries tasting and shopping. Despite spending on flights and activities, Stefanie estimated a clear saving of £100 compared to a typical UK theme park day out.

The Torquay-based director of a social enterprise stated: "I wanted to do something for my birthday, but didn't have enough for a full-blown holiday. So I just started looking around for ideas and realised we could go to Paris and back in a day."

She continued: "We didn't do it as cheap as we could have, but it was definitely cheaper than taking the kids to a waterpark or some of the attractions in the UK which are extortionate. So I think we did pretty well for the price."

Setting off from Bristol at 7.15am in April 2023, they arrived in Paris by 9.30am and headed straight for breakfast beneath the Eiffel Tower. Their cab ride came up to €73, while cross-city travel via Tootbus, the sightseeing bus service, cost them a total of €83.

She explained: "The bus saved our legs from getting tired and meant we could see loads of the main sights. You can get on and off wherever you want, which worked really well for us. My eldest's only goal for the trip was having a croissant and he wanted the most expensive croissant in Paris, so we were able to stop off on our way and do that."

Stefanie also took advantage of the Tootbus to pop into her favourite shop, Le Creuset, and take a stroll down the Champs-Elysees. The family enjoyed a tasty treat of avocado and sundried tomatoes on toast before rounding off their adventure back at the Eiffel Tower.

After their whirlwind tour, Stefanie and her boys hopped in a €57 taxi to catch their 8.10pm flight, landing back in the UK at 8.25pm local time. She pointed out that the entire escapade was more cost-effective than a typical day out closer to home, even with the extra shopping and travel expenses thrown in.

She noted: "Even our local water park costs £95 for the day with parking included. It costs £500 for Legoland with an overnight stay."

The successful day trip was a stroke of luck for Stefanie, who had prepared for potential setbacks.

She confessed: "I had to do a lot of warning my kids that this could be a complete disaster because if you get a couple hours delay, you've missed half your day. My eldest is autistic and my youngest would have got bored if there had been any delays, so I brought a whole bag of fidget toys which broke everything up a bit.

"It's a whistle-stop tour so we had to decide not to go into any of the attractions because of the queuing time, but it was a really good way of experimenting with travelling with the kids. I felt really good because I'd survived taking my kids to another country in one day it was a proud single-parent moment."

She advised anyone planning a similar journey to wear comfortable footwear and recommended packing as much as possible without overburdening yourself, saying: "It was a really fun adventure. We're hoping to do another one in the summer, ideally to Alicante."

The total expenses for the trip are estimated to be about £400:.

Return flights - £166 for three

Bus - £70 (€83)

Food and drinks - £50

Taxis - £111 (€130)

Total - £397
