A woman was reportedly choked and thrown from the top deck of a luxury Caribbean cruise ship.

Police in Aruba are investigating the death of the 52-year-old woman, who reportedly fell onto a life boat and severed her leg in the horrific incident on the Royal Princess cruise liner.

It is believed the woman plummeted from the 16th deck at around 4am, landing on a lifeboat on deck 7.

The victim’s partner, an American man described as ‘muscular’ was escorted from the cruise by police on Tuesday.

Local media report the death is being investigated as a potential murder case, though no arrests have been made.

The couple, who are yet to be named, were aboard the ship for the trip from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to Aruba from November 9.

A man was seen choking the victim before she was thrown from the liner, according to media reports in Aruba.

Onlookers who saw the woman hit the lifeboat below said the scene was horribly ‘gruesome’, with ‘glass everywhere’.

Authorities are yet to confirm if the woman died from asphyxiation or injuries sustained in the fall.

A source aboard the ship told DailyMail.com: “We are sailing the southern Caribbean.

“It was two passengers, they had a row in the casino that night.”

Another passenger claimed: “Ten police officers came aboard. The announcement was a criminal investigation was to be conducted before we are given clearance.”

Princess Cruises said: “Princess Cruises can confirm that a 52-year-old American female guest passed away early yesterday morning aboard Royal Princess as the ship was en route to Aruba.

“It was reported to the local authorities who met and boarded the ship upon arrival. The cause of death is not yet known at this time.

“We are deeply saddened by this incident and offer our sincere condolences to the family and those affected.”
