From Prima

Little beats tucking into a large glass of wine when you want to wind down after a busy week. But if you’re bored of buying the same supermarket Sauvignon, we’ve discovered a genius online wine club that offer great deals on the best red wines, whites, rosé and sparkling, sourced from independent producers all over the world.

And what’s more, they deliver directly to your door at the convenient click of a button.

In the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, Naked Wines has informed Prima UK that due to an unprecedented surge in demand over the past few days, delivery times are longer than usual. As a result, they have temporarily paused taking additional new orders, and when orders eventually re-open, they will be prioritising Angel customers first.

They added that saying connected to one another is important at a time like this, so they are looking at ways they can use their online community of over 200,000 wine lovers to help people stay in touch, and share a virtual glass of wine whilst staying at home.

Here’s all you need to know about Naked Wines’ unique subscription service…

What is Naked Wines?

Winemakers – particularly small, independent ones – generally have to spend a big chunk on advertising their product, so by the time it reaches the supermarket or bottle shop, the price has dramatically increased. And that means less money for the producer, and higher prices for the consumer. But what Naked Wines has cleverly done is cut out the middleman. They invest in talented, independent winemakers and do the marketing for them.

The bonus for you? They get hold of exclusive wines directly from the producer, minus the marketing surcharges. This means Naked Wines subscribers, or ‘Angels’ as they call them, get access to quaffable wines at much lower prices.

How does it work?

Unlike other online wine subscriptions where you pay a monthly set fee, Naked Wines puts you in the driving seat. You get to choose the wines you want, when you want them.

The process is simple. Once you receive confirmation of your Angel membership (usually around 30 days) you’ll be allocated a piggy bank that you pay £20 into each month. It’s up to you how and when you want to spend it. You can either spend straight away, or save up and accumulate.

If at any point you want to buy more than you have in your pot, any difference in cost will be taken from the registered card on the account. Essentially you can buy as little or as much you’d like at any point during the month.

What do I get?

As a fully fledged Angel you’ll have access to over 250 wines from 114 winemakers all over the world. The £20 you pay each month goes directly to the winemakers as an investment in their business. They, in return, offer daily discounts – up to 25-50 per cent off RRP – on wines that can’t be bought anywhere else.

Is it better value than supermarket wine?

Naked Wines prides itself on offering a great selection of ‘exclusive’ wines made lovingly by independent winemakers. It’s not about offering ‘cheap wines’, but providing customers with great discounts on better quality wines, so you’ll pay a lot less for a superior bottle.

Eamon FitzGerald, UK Managing Director of Naked Wines says: ‘Thanks to the power of crowdfunding, we’re able to back talented independent winemakers to concentrate on what they love and do best – making delicious wine. It’s a completely different way of buying wine where everybody wins.

‘We connect customers with the winemakers. At Naked there's a human story behind every single bottle, with a face on the website, and if you're unsure about anything you can talk to them yourself.’

What about delivery?

Next day home delivery is free on all orders of £80 or more, or £4.99 for anything else. Following the spread of coronavirus and as we previously mentioned, Naked Wines has temporarily paused taking additional new orders, and delivery times are currently longer than usual.

Will I be tied in?

No. You can pick the day of month you pay, change the amount or cancel at any time you like and receive a full refund. What’s more, all wines come with a 100% money-back guarantee if one isn’t to your liking.

Any other perks of the wine membership?

As well as insider discounts Angels will be sent invites to exclusive tastings, chat to winemakers and fellow Angels online, pre-order wines before they land on the shelves, and receive customised recommendations based on your personal taste preference. Plus, with every case ordered Naked Wines will throw in an additional free bottle.
