National Guard Troops Deputized Ahead of Presidential Inauguration

Tens of thousands of National Guard troops were deployed to Washington and deputized as special police as security was ramped up for Joe Biden’s inauguration after pro-Trump riots at the US Capitol on January 6.

Footage from Monday, January 18, shows troops with the Wisconsin and Illinois National Guards being deputized as US Capitol Police special officers. The ceremony took place inside the Visitor Center of the Capitol building which, two weeks earlier, was stormed by Trump loyalists seeking to disrupt the count of Electoral College votes by Congress. The troops would serve as Capitol police officers through January 24, the National Guard said. Credit: DC National Guard via Storyful
