More details have been released about a new footbridge over the M3. Last year Bagshot bridge was closed, then removed following reports that it was unsafe. Now National Highways has released new details over what could be replacing it and when.

The footbridge was closed after an assessment highlighted defects and National Highways shut it with immediate effect on Monday, October 3. In December the bridge was removed which resulted in a four day closure of the M3 in both directions.

Work is underway to design a new footbridge as well as put the plans needed to build it in place. The installation is scheduled for May 2025 with construction meant to start in November 2024.

A National Highways spokesperson stated: “The installation of the new footbridge on the M3, scheduled for May 2025, is proceeding as planned. Detailed design work will continue until October 2024, with mobilisation scheduled for the same month. Construction is scheduled to begin in November 2024, starting with the construction of the abutments.”

“The steel footbridge will be lifted into place in May 2025. To manage traffic during construction, narrow lanes will be implemented starting from November, with plans developed in conjunction with the National Emergency Area Retrofit (NEAR) programme to minimise disruptions. The footbridge installation will take place during full weekend closures of the M3 in May, with specific dates to be announced later.”

In a letter posted to Facebook by local MP Michael Gove, plans show that a Warren Truss design is proposed. Posters put up for locals state that a design for the steel footbridge is “progressing well.”

Within the letter on Facebook there are also some proposed road closures. Firstly, there is a suggested two night closure in each direction of the M3 to put in place traffic management measures, as well as a later two night closure of the Eastbound carriageway to remove and replace some of the existing structures.

In the letter posted by Gove, there are also proposals for a full weekend closure of the M3 to build the bridge and then lift it into place. These could still be subject to change, and there are no set dates.
