NCIS has released an extended trailer for the tribute episode in memory of late star David McCallum.

The Scottish actor, known to fans for playing Dr Donald 'Ducky' Mallard on the beloved procedural, passed away last September. A new episode set to air next Monday (February 19) will see the team learning about Ducky's passing, whilst he manages to give them a hand to solve one last case.

The clip shared on Instagram shows Ducky's protégé and friend Dr Jimmy Palmer, portrayed by Brian Dietzen, realising his mentor has died, while other scenes focus on the rest of the NCIS team mourning. A montage also includes past characters Mark Harmon's Gibbs and Michael Weatherly's DiNozzo sharing the screen with McCallum.

"Join us this Monday as we pay tribute to the beloved Ducky in a special episode you won't want to miss," the caption reads, hinting at fans having to brace themselves for an emotional journey.

Dietzen, who co-wrote the episode dedicated to McCallum, commented: "On Monday we'll remember, mourn and celebrate a beloved member of our family. We'll see you all then."

Titled 'The Stories We Leave Behind', the episode "follows the agents as they mourn Ducky and find comfort in working on one of his unfinished cases involving a woman whose father was dishonourably discharged from the Marines".

"Everyone at NCIS felt it was important to do an episode that honours such a legendary actor, not to mention a dear friend," NCIS showrunners David North and Steven D Binder told TVLine when sharing plans of a tribute.

"In the episode, the team will learn of Ducky's passing and reflect on their memories of him as they grieve. And true to Ducky's meticulous and compassionate nature, even after he's gone, he still manages to solve one last crime with the team."

NCIS airs on CBS in the US, and returns for season 21 on February 12. Seasons 1-20 are streaming on Disney+ in the UK.
