Ncuti Gatwa admits filming Doctor Who with 20 babies was 'very chaotic'

Ncuti Gatwa has admitted filming with 20 babies for Doctor Who's upcoming episode was "very chaotic".

In the season 14 opener, titled Space Babies, the Time Lord and his companion Ruby Sunday, played by Mille Gibson, are stranded on a spaceship occupied by talking newborns and they have to figure out a way to get home.

Speaking to Variety at the U.S. premiere on Thursday, the Sex Education star admitted working with so many babies at once presented an interesting challenge.

"All the crew had to get involved in keeping the babies entertained," Gatwa said. "Very much a group effort. Chaotic though. Very, very chaotic."

He quipped, "They were such divas... They had so many demands."

However, he insisted the experience was also "magical" because everyone needed to work together to keep the infants engaged.

Meanwhile, Gibson shared that she will never forget filming a heartfelt speech in front of the babies.

"It was so hard honestly," she recalled. "It was the most bizarre thing but it will stay in my mind forever."

Showrunner Russell T. Davies explained to the outlet that they hired young actors to say the lines and made the babies' mouths move to the dialogue using CGI in post-production.

"I think they're about nine or 11 years old," he divulged. "We recorded them and mapped (the dialogue) out on CG. It takes... many many hours of working on it."

Season 14 of Doctor Who launches in the U.K. at midnight on Saturday, or Friday evening in the U.S.
