A former parish hall in Nuneaton faces demolition. What was the old St Nicholas Church Hall, next to the Christadelphian hall on Vicarage Street, is set to be pulled down.

It forms part of the area where Warwickshire County Council plans to create the £20m 'Justice Walk' development, with apartments and a new library and office space. The county council has been given planning permission to pull down the parish hall, which was built in 1930.

A planning statement explains that the building has stood empty for more than half a decade. It has been the target of vandals and fire tore through it back in 2019.

"The church hall was purchased by Warwickshire County Council as part of a wider regeneration plan for the Vicarage Street area with the long term plan to demolish it and make way for new development," a planning report explains. "The building was, until Dec 2017, leased by a local community organisation on a temporary basis until the time for demolition.

"Following a site visit by WCC it was deemed in an unsuitable state to lease again due to the state of the building and it would be more effective to demolish the building now rather than for it to fall into further state of disrepair. The site will then form part of a wider development site which will be promoted to developers for development purposes."

As part of planning permission for demolition to be granted, a number of conditions had to be met. Among them were carrying out bat surveys as well as bat mitigation projects and archaeological project design work.

The county council has now applied for these conditions to be lifted as the works have been carried out. Official permission has to be given for this.

So planning officers at the Town Hall are now looking at the conditions approval application. As part of the planning process, there is public consultation.

People can look at the application on the council's website, searching in the planning applications section for reference number 040292. The consultation deadline is June 4,

The target decision date for the application is July 9.
