Yahoo News Neighbours boss addresses possibility of backlash over wedding twist

Jason Herbison, executive producer of the highly anticipated Neighbours reboot, has addressed the possible backlash following the premiere's time jump.
Monday's premiere episode (September 18) ended with a cliffhanger that saw characters Toadie (Ryan Moloney) and Terese (Rebekah Elmaloglou) about to tie the knot.
The ceremony was part of a larger twist, in which viewers learnt that the lives of Ramsay Street's residents were now set two whole years after the "final ever" episode in 2022.
Herbison opened up about the potential reaction to the "truly surprising" twist to TV Tonight and explained: "I’ve learned over the years that you can’t please every fan. In fact, what our audience wants and enjoys varies wildly, depending what Facebook post or Twitter feed you happen to read."

Herbison also touched on Terese and Toadie's original endings in 2022, which saw the characters close out the original series of Neighbours with different partners.
"For example, there were people who loved Paul and Terese getting back together in the finale, yet there were others who didn’t," he continued.
"Some people loved Toadie and Melanie as a couple, others felt the wedding was rushed. Like every storyline, I expect there to be fierce debate.
"Our audience research constantly tells us that viewers want to be surprised and I think this story does that in spades. It can also be true to life. I’ve had many instances where I’ve learned people are together and gone – wow, I never saw that one coming!"

The producer also teased even more time-travel-centric plots for the Neighbours reboot, as he promised that viewers would "absolutely" learn what happened between Toadie and his ex-wife, and Terese and bad-boy Paul Robinson.
"It’s a massive story locomotive with cause and effect for many characters. We also have the unique opportunity to go back in time – what did happen during those two years?"
