Neil Etheridge joins 'powerhouse' new club after Birmingham City exit

Former Birmingham City goalkeeper Neil Etheridge has found a new home after leaving St Andrew's.

After spending his entire playing career in the United Kingdom, London-born Philippines international Etheridge has signed for Thai side Buriram United. The 34-year-old goalkeeper has been presented in Thailand and will wear the number 13 shirt for his new club.

Commenting on the move, Etheridge said: "Delighted to have signed for Buriram United. An honour to be here at this fantastic powerhouse. I can’t wait to get started on this new journey and adventure. Thank you for all the support to make this happen. Let’s do this."

Buriram United have been the dominant club in the Thai top flight in recent years. They have won three consecutive league titles and 10 in the past 16 years.

Etheridge joined Blues from Cardiff City in the summer of 2020. He was back-up to John Ruddy in his final two seasons with Blues and finished up playing 79 games for the club.

Reflecting on his Blues career, Etheridge added: "I just wanted to say thank you to Birmingham City Football Club and you Bluenoses who would come out rain or shine all across the country to support the team.

"A time in my career with many new experiences and challenges along the way. I met some great people who I now class as friends, they will not be forgotten... getting me through tough and difficult times.

"I would like to thank my family and loved ones for your constant and unconditional support. Finally I wish the club all the best in the future for this new journey they are about to embark on."

The departures of Etheridge and Ruddy, who confirmed he would also be leaving Blues last week, means Maik Taylor will be working with an entirely new goalkeeping department next season. Blues have already signed Ryan Allsop from Hull City and are looking to add another goalkeeper.
